Much has been written about the lessons from the Covid-19 induced pivot to emergency remote learning in higher education. Numerous studies and anecdotes point to deteriorating student performance during the pandemic and cite remote instruction as the reason. There seems to be a cause-and-effect bandwagon that a strict diet of online learning is bad for students at any level and a return to in-person instruction is the answer.

Critics of online learning often blame the medium itself rather than an ineffective learning experience, when the focus should be on how to deliver the best teaching possible using all available tools and formats.

Andreina Parisi-Amon is the VP of Learning & Teaching at Engageli. She brings over 15 years of experience across academia and industry-driving innovation in education. Before joining Engageli, she spent three years in K-12 applied learning development, and five years creating and leading Coursera’s Teaching & Learning team. She has extensive experience in research, curriculum development, teaching, and building partnerships with university and industry leaders. Andreina has a Ph.D. from Stanford University and a BSc from Duke University.

Rebecca Quintana’s roles at the University of Michigan are associate director, learning experience design in the Center for Academic Innovation, and adjunct lecturer in the School of Education. She applies learning sciences theories and methods to the design of technology-rich learning environments. Her research explores how people learn with technology, including with tools that enable social learning and knowledge building. In her teaching, she advances innovative approaches that use technology to instantiate community-oriented approaches to instruction. She earned her PhD from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto in the department of curriculum, teaching and learning.

Assistant Professor, Organization, Information and Learning Sciences at The University New Mexico


Stephanie Moore is Assistant Professor in the Organization, Information, and Learning Sciences program and is the Barbara Bush Foundation / Dollar General Foundation Fellow. Her work with these foundations focuses on the use of learning technologies for adult literacy and guidance for foundations wishing to invest in the development in learning technologies. Her research includes the use of performance improvement for assessing the needs of new teachers and developing targeted micro-instruction as well as the development of effective online and blended human resources workforce development for the federal government that can lead to eventual certification. She presently consults with clients on a range of projects including online learning, the use of technology for learning, and organizational performance improvement. Her areas of expertise include online and blended learning, educational / learning technologies, multimedia learning, performance improvement, ethics of technology and integration of societal impact into the design and planning process, as well as a deep background in accessibility and UDL.
