Sensemaking in Executive Education: Preparing Business Leaders for the “Unknown”

In an ever changing, complex world and business landscape, how do Executive Education professionals enable business leaders to prepare, transform and thrive? “Sensemaking", a term introduced by Karl Weick, refers to how we structure the unknown so as to be able to act in it. Sensemaking involves coming up with a plausible understanding—a map—of a shifting world; testing this map with others through data collection, action, and conversation; and then refining, or abandoning, the map depending on how credible it is. Sensemaking enables leaders to have a better grasp of what is going on in their environments, thus facilitating other leadership activities such as visioning, relating, and inventing.”

 

We’re hosting an interactive panel discussion featuring Executive Education leaders from around the globe on Thursday, October 20th. In this session, panelists from London Business School, Imperial College Business School and Wharton Online will discuss how to design meaningful sense-making learning experiences while maintaining authenticity, as well as how to teach problem-solving to aid in the growth of business leaders.

She brings over 10 years of experience working with leading edtech organizations to promote equity and access to education on a global scale. Before joining Engageli, she was Head of Partner Learning and Development at Coursera, where she established and managed an engaged community of practice for top universities worldwide, while also advising product teams on learning science and best practices for pedagogy-enhanced product development. Talia also led a global educator community for Khan Academy and led national programming initiatives for the Ministry of Education and Digital Israel. Based in Israel, Talia has a life-long passion for education and social impact.

She has a MA in Political Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Don Huesman is the Managing Director of Wharton Online at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Previously, Don held positions at Wharton as the Managing Director of the Innovation Group, as Senior Director supervising technology support for the School’s academic departments and faculty and overseeing the use of technology in Executive Education. Don completed his doctoral work at Penn’s Graduate School of Education, researching technology enabled adult online education. Don has been a lecturer in Wharton’s graduate and undergraduate programs, teaching courses in IT and Decision Sciences. Don was an entrepreneur and software pioneer in the early days of the personal computer industry, co-founding the company that produced The Organizer, the first personal information manager for PCs. His company put the first calendars, to-do lists, and contact management systems on personal computers. Don has taught the strategic use of information systems in a variety of executive education programs, including Wharton’s Advanced Management Program, the International Forum and the American Institute.

Russell Miller is Imperial College Business School’s Director of Learning Solutions & Innovation for Executive Education. Russell has been involved in learning, consulting & leadership development for over 20 years. He has held senior consulting and leadership development roles with a range of organisations and has partnered with many corporate and government clients to help them develop strategy and to design, develop and deliver major learning initiatives. At Imperial he leads design and delivery teams across open enrolment, online and custom executive education. His particular passion is in supporting organisations to build sustainable high performance cultures through effective leadership. Russell’s work has taken him all over the world and when he is not travelling he enjoys relaxing at home in Cornwall with his family.
